Most Discus females mature with 9 months while males takes 14 months. So if you think they are about there, place a spawning cone in your community tank (about 10~15 fishes in a 3 feet tank) then wait and observe. If your feeding is good and water is fine within the ph range of 6.5 to 5.5you will soon see them pairing up.

Once they find a suitable mate the pair will probably inspect then cone or a corner of the glass. They will chase the rest of the fishes away if they come to close to them. The pair will then do their courtship dance, which comes in the form of bowing and shaking. It is advisable to place the pair in a tank of their own. (A 2 feet tank will do) Please keep water level above 13 inches and use a sponge filter, (keep the aeration low when they are about to spawn) Soon they will start to peck (clean) the cone. Discus usually spawn in the evening. The whole process of spawning will take more than an hour with the femalelaying the eggs and the male fertilizing it.

After the whole process the pair will stay close and fan the eggs. Now's the time to increase your aeration. The eggs if fertilized will hatch in 60hours. The young suspended friied have a sticky thread attached to their head and a food sack in the belly that will last them for about two days. After which they will start to detach themselves but the parents will catch them with their mouth and pit them back. Once too many fries detach themselves the parents will be likely to give up and at this point it is very crucial that the fries finds the body of the parents for its through the secretion of slime from the body that the fries finds it's next source of food. The parents will interchange every few minutes to feed the fries. On the fourth day on the body it's advisable to feed artemia (brine shrimp) to fries to ensure good grow. With two weeks your fries will be eating ox heart and can be separated from the parents.
